On September 22, 2009 the Washoe County Commissioners approved a revised alarm ordinance,
Chapter 54, of the Washoe County Code. In 2008, the Sheriff’s Office responded to over 2,000 false
alarm calls. False alarms cost the County and its citizens thousands of dollars per year and take deputies
away from actual emergencies. The ordinance also creates a registration process, provides for annual alarm
permit fees for residential and business alarms, and provides for fees for false alarms to encourage all
alarm users to maintain the reliability of and to properly use their alarm equipment.
